Hole 1
Index Hole Number 1. Par 4, 331 yards, sharp dog-leg right. The right side of the fairway is lined with houses and apartment buildings; anyone with a slice would need to play it well left. We were told that it was about 220 yards to the corner of the dog leg.

Erv hit a 5-wood a little thin and the ball traveled about 175 yards to the right side of the narrow fairway. The drive was not quite long enough for an open shot to the green because of a medium tall tree that stood about 15 yards to the right of the fairway. A 4-iron over the tree didn't quite go high enough and the ball caught some leaves and fell short of the green about 40 yard in deep rough. He then shanked a sand wedge (or maybe the tall grass caught the club head) that left the ball in the deep sand trap to the right of the green. The fourth shot out of the sand was above the hole and on the back fringe of the steeply sloping green. His first putt was down hill and ended up long and left; missed the 20-foot putt coming back for a triple-bogey 7. A terrible start.

Ben hit a 3-iron off the tee about 180 yards into the right rough. His 9-iron second shot was 20 yards short of the green. A chip with a pitching wedge was long; the ball stopped on the back fringe of the green. He then holed out with a 7-iron chip shot down hill for a par. A good start.
