Hole Number 14, par 5, 548 yards. This is a long dog-leg right. A line of tall pines along the right side prevents any attempt at cutting the corner of the dog leg. A moderate wind was in our face but because the hole is some distance away from the ocean it seemed to not be blowing as hard. The caddy said this hole was so long that not even Tiger Woods could reach it in two.
Erv hit a great drive down the middle and well out into the fairway as it rounded the corner. He then hit a great 3-wood shot down the middle to about 150 yards of the hole. A huge bunker guards the front of the green and the pin was placed directly behind the bunker. The bunker obscured a steep terrace running away from the bunker. Erv played it safe and aimed for the small bit of green visible to the right of the bunker. His third shot landed on the green but skidded in the rough to the right of the green, pin high. A chip shot up the steep terrace went past the hole about 20 feet. The difficult putt coming back stopped just 6 inches short of the hole but at least it didn't go all the way down the terrace. The short tap in gave him a bogey 6. Ben hit his driver far left and a long way from the hole. He hit a 3-iron, then left a 9-iron short. His fourth shot with a sand wedge went over the green. After a chip shot on to the green with a pitching wedge, he two putted for a double bogey 7. |
