Hole Number 5, par 3, 129 yards. This is a new hole designed by Jack Nicklaus and constructed only 2 years ago. This is the first hole in which the ocean comes into play. Any shot 15 yards to the right of the green is a goner over a high cliff that plunges toward the ocean. Three sand traps nearly surround the hole. Again, we had a strong tail wind behind us. A large new home (mansion) is under construction to the left of the hole that will become the residence of Charles Schwab.
Erv's drive with a pitching wedge was a high arching shot was pin high to the left of the green in deep rough. His chip with a sand wedge only went about 3 feet toward the green which sloped downward toward the ocean. His second chip landed on the green but went 40 feet past the hole. He managed to 2-putt from there for a bogey 4. Ben also hit a pitching wedge that was right on line with the pin but stopped about 15 feet short of the hole. He had a sharp left to right putt for birdie that just missed and he tapped in for a par. |
