Wrapping it up

We finished the round at 7:15 pm; 5 hours and 35 minutes. Normally, an 18 hole round can be played in about 4 to 4.5 hours. Why does it take longer at Pebble Beach? The primary reason is probably the difficulty of the course. Ben and I had scores of 95 and 97 and both of us usually shoot in the low 80s. Our playing partners from South Africa were much worse; they didn't share their scores with us but they must have been well above 120.

Another reason could be the spectacular views. It was tempting to stop on nearly every hole and take it all in. The Pebble Beach website (www.pebblebeach.com) brags that it is the most beautiful walk in golf and we agree.

I want wish to express my sincere appreciation to my former graduate students who made this experience possible with this very generous retirement gift. It was a real treat to be able to play Pebble Beach with my son Ben. We will both cherish the memories. The U.S. Open will be played here on June15-18 and whenever any of the great golfers hit one into a sand trap, I will be able to say, I've been there and done that.

The oceanside room at The Inn on Spanish Bay was also a great treat and Janet and I enjoyed it very much. Ben stayed with friends in Monterey. We arrived about 3 hours prior to the 4 PM check-in time but the hotel graciously let Janet go to our room because she was not feeling well. A visit to a clinic the next morning in Monterey confirmed that she had a significant bacterial infection. A prescription for antibiotics kept her going for the rest of the trip. We visited the Monterey Aquarium and Cannery Row on Tuesday afternoon before heading back to Santa Barbara.
