A ROUND OF GOLF AT PEBBLE BEACH

Ben and Erv's rounds at Pebble Beach April 24, 2000 Tee-time 1:40 PM

We arrived at Pebble Beach golf course about 1:10, checked in and went to the practice green in front of a row of Pebble Beach shops, all selling clothing with Pebble Beach logos. One shop was the official U.S. Open store and was selling nothing but stuff with U.S. Open logos on it. The practice green was steeply sloped and very fast. Ben and I tried putting from above a hole to see if we could stop the ball above the hole. Nearly impossible. At 1:40 we reported to the tee. We were handed a form on which to write our names as we wanted them to appear on personalized souvenir bag tags that would be ready for us at the end of the round.

We were paired with a congenial married couple in their late forties from Johannesburg, South Africa who were spending the week at Pebble Beach Resorts. Both worked for Cummins Diesel as sales representatives. They had hired a caddy to carry both of their bags. We carried our own.

The starter gave us a few instructions such as fix all divots and ball marks and informed us there would be no mulligans off the first tee. What we did on the rest of the course was between us and the caddy. We agreed to play the white tees. From these tees the course is 6116 yards long and is rated 72.1 with a slope of 134. Veenker Memorial at Iowa State from the gold tees is rated 71.2 with a slope of 120. Both are par 72 courses.
